hurrIn preparation for potential impacts from Tropical Storm Hermine making landfall along the Gulf Coast of Florida, the Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) has initiated its mutual aid plan to assist Florida’s public power communities with support to help restore power as fast as possible.

During emergency situations, public power utilities in Florida partner through a Mutual Aid Agreement that enables FMEA member utilities to call on each other for emergency workers, equipment and supplies to assist in power restoration after an emergency.

Depending on where this storm makes landfall, many areas of Florida could be likely impacted with heavy rains, potential flooding and wind damage. As a result, electric outages are likely. Given the potential for widespread impact, public power utility crews outside of Florida, away from the path of the storm, have also been notified and are on standby with utility crews ready for dispatch to Florida.

“Because of our mutual aid agreement, storm response and restoration from public power utilities is quick, efficient, and effective. Our state and national network is extensive and immediate,” says Barry Moline, FMEA Executive Director. “Electric crews from public power communities in Florida, as well as across the southeast, are on standby to send crews to help other Florida public power communities in need.”

About FMEA: The Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) represents the unified interests of 34 public power communities across the state, which provide electricity to more than 3 million of Florida’s residential and business consumers.
